A typing game that actually keeps you hooked
Typing Shark turns typing practice into a small underwater chase. Fish, jellyfish and pufferfish swim in from the right, each one carrying a word. Type the word and your shark lunges and gobbles it up. Miss too many and the poor thing starves.
It runs right in your browser, so there is nothing to install or sign up for. Take a two-minute break between tasks, or settle in for a longer run and try to beat your own best score. Words start short and simple, then get longer and faster as your level climbs.
Pick your own challenge before each run: three difficulty levels, and word packs from relaxed ocean vocabulary to everyday English and developer terms.
How to play
- Press Play and click or tap the game so the typing box is ready.
- Find a word above a creature swimming toward the left side of the screen.
- Type it exactly. No Enter key needed: the shark eats the moment your last letter lands.
- Keep an eye on hunger. The bar slowly fills and jumps when a creature escapes. Eating empties it. When it is full, the game ends.
- Chain combos. A streak without typos multiplies your points, and every six words you move up a level.
Difficulty, word packs and the golden fish
Easy · Normal · Hard
Easy gives you slower fish and shorter words. Hard brings faster swimmers, longer words and a hungrier shark. Each level keeps its own best score.
Four word packs
Ocean for a calm start, Everyday for common English, Tech for programming terms, or Mixed if you want a bit of everything.
Golden fish
From level 2 a glowing golden fish sometimes swims by. Catch it for triple points and a three second freeze.
Live speed
The WPM counter updates as you play, and your results screen shows accuracy, words eaten and best combo. You can share your score with a tap.
Tips to type faster and miss less
Accuracy first
A clean word beats a rushed one. Speed follows once you stop making typos.
Look ahead
Read the next word while you finish the current one. Your eyes should always be a step in front of your fingers.
Target the closest fish
The creature nearest the shark is the one about to escape, so start with it.
Stay relaxed
Loose wrists and shoulders help more than you would think. Tension makes you slower.
Keep it short and regular
Ten minutes a day beats one long weekend session. Small habits add up quickly.
Ignore the clock
Do not chase the score on every run. Warm up calmly and your best runs will come naturally.
Why play instead of just drilling?
Plain typing drills work, but they are easy to quit. A game gives you a reason to keep going: a clear goal, a little pressure and a score you want to beat. That mix is great for building the rhythm and reflexes that turn into real-world typing speed.
Typing Shark is a warm-up and a bit of fun, not a replacement for a full touch typing course. Use it alongside one, and you will notice the difference in emails, essays and code.
Frequently asked questions
Is Typing Shark free to play?
Yes. Typing Shark is completely free. There is no sign-up, no download and no ads in the game area. Open the page and press Play.
How do I play Typing Shark?
Type the word shown above a sea creature. When you finish the word, the shark eats it and your hunger bar drops. You do not need to press Enter. Let creatures swim past and the shark gets hungrier.
What happens when I type a wrong letter?
The wrong letter is ignored, so you can simply carry on with the right one. A typo does reset your combo, so careful typing earns a higher score.
Can I play Typing Shark on my phone or tablet?
Yes. The game adapts to any screen size. Tap the typing box to open your keyboard. A physical keyboard on a tablet works even better.
Will this game really improve my typing speed?
Short daily sessions help with speed, accuracy and confidence, and the game makes practice less boring. For learning proper finger placement from scratch, pair it with a structured touch typing course.
Can I install Typing Shark or play it offline?
Yes. Use the Install app button on supported browsers, or on iPhone and iPad choose Share and then Add to Home Screen. After your first visit the game also works without an internet connection.
Can I change the difficulty or the words?
Yes. On the start screen pick Easy, Normal or Hard and choose a word pack: Ocean, Everyday, Tech or Mixed. Your choice is saved on your device, and each difficulty keeps its own best score.
What is the golden fish?
A golden fish appears now and then from level 2. Eat it for triple points and a three second freeze that stops the other creatures and the hunger bar.
